Part 3: Bill of Materials and Cost
Below is an overview of the parts used to assemble the media table. The media table is not an expensive piece to make, however, the 3/4" flanges can be expensive if you buy them by the piece at the big box stores. It is cheaper to buy two (2) packages of 6 for $11.99 each, for roughly $24 at Menards. If you buy eight (8) at $3.89 each, it would cost you roughly $31. You may save even more by buying them online. I searched Amazon and found a 10-pack for $12.99, which would save you about $11. The link to these parts at Amazon is posted below.
I sized the media table to fit in a certain location, keeping standard board sizes in mind. I will typically not make a table 48" because you would have to buy 10 foot boards instead of 8 foot because you usually need to cut the ends off each board due to damage. I chose 46", but it ended up being a little less because I needed to cut more of the bad wood off of the ends. The distance between the shelves is 12". This can be easily changed by changing either the 8" or the 3" nipples. 12" just looked right to me.
The total cost of all the materials for the project , not including stain or polyurethane, was $97.52. You can save a few more bucks if you shop at Menards when they have their 11% rebate.
